Access Gating[]
Access-gating is usually a crucial part of creating a community. Just like in a discord server, you might want to have a lobby where anyone can come in and say hi or learn more about your community space.
Method 1: Multiple Spaces[]
The most secure way to achieve this is having at least 2 seperate spaces.
Space 1 would be set as open, with no password, domain-gating or guest-list. This would be designed to look like a lobby or entrance, and could look like an actual lobby or some other visual representation of the outside of your actualy community space. If your communtiy space is on a space station, the lobby could for example be a rocket launch pad.
Space 2 would be your actual community space. Now there are 2 different ways to achieve access-gating on a space: Via Password, or via guest-list.
Method 1a: Password Space[]
An space owner can set up a space to only be accessed by entering a specific password. You can find information on how to do that on the official Gather Help Page.
Method 1b: Guest-list Space (Requires Premium)[]
If you space is on a premium Gather plan, you can set up a guest-list. If you already have the emails of your community members, this should be an easy way of implementing access-gating.
Remember! Adding a guest-list requires everyone in that space to be logged in.
Method 2: Password-Gated Doors[]
Passworded doors are in beta and were released in June 2021. [1]
Using a passworded door allows you to gate an area in your space behind a password. Only moderators have the ability to modify or set this password. This is great for example if you want to have multiple different levels of access in the same Gather space. For example team-specific rooms.
Be careful though! Once the right password is entered, anyone can follow you through the time the door is open (A few seconds).
Tips & Tricks[]
- Use the Calendar object for shared calendars!
- You can mix and match with as many spaces as you want. For example a separate event space as well.
